An original Thonet rocking chair, from an original design by Michael Thonet for Gebruder Thonet. This rocking chair is still in very good vintage condition. The black lacquered bentwood has signs of age and use consistent with its age. The cane seat and backrest are perfectly intact.
Michael Thonet rocking chair Reference: this chair model - one of the bestsellers - is still remaining in the 1916 J. & J. Kohn Sales catalogue as illustrated on page 65, fig. 830.
Michael Thonet (1796-1871) was a German-Austrian cabinet maker, known for the invention of bentwood furniture, which was at the forefront of the beginning of Modern Design. Le Corbusier used the Thonet chairs for his projects and mentioned them as Modern Furniture.
