FRANK DOWNTON (b.1936). A fabulous, hand cut vinyl on plastic board of ’Op Art’ coloured shapes joined by black lines.

About Frank Downton

Born in 1936, Frank Downton comes from a family of artists and was tutored by his father from a young age. During the mid- 1960's he worked for Chris Prater at the prestigious Kelpra Studio in Old Street London.
At this time Kelpra Studio dealt directly with the likes of Bridget Riley, Eduardo Paolozzi, Gillian Ayres and Sidney Nolan. The artists frequently came to the studio and carried out work on the premises.
Frank Downton personally assisted the artists in their work – often working off a light box, cutting stencils from roughs, weeding , silk screen printing and, in short, anything the artists required of him in order to create and reproduce their work.
Downton developed very close working relationships with Riley and Paolozzi in particular- and was assigned exclusively to them at their request. Inevitably, such exposure to the intimate creative process of these artistic luminaries has had a profound master-pupil influence on Downton own style and artistic psyche.
In recent years, now retired from the constraints of professional life, Downton has begun to create works of art in his own right – simply for his own enjoyment and to decorate his home.
Despite the forty plus year hiatus, the technical honing of the Kelpra Studio days shines through in his current creations.
Choosing to work in vinyl on plastic, Downton's unique output displays vibrancy, immediacy and accessibility. His method of working is entirely spontaneous.
A naturally modest man, he has been coaxed to share his personal art with the world for the first time.
